Rosemary Eleanor (Matunis) Gluckow, 80, of Ocean Grove, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Frackville, Pa. on Jan. 18, 1932, Rosemary lived life on her own terms. At the age of 17, Rosie took a bus to New York City, where she enrolled in The Mount Sinai School of Nursing, graduating with Commendations and Honors. Beginning a life defined by service to others, she served as a registered nurse at Beekman Downtown Hospital, East Orange General Hospital, Orange Memorial Hospital, Jersey Shore Medical Center - Fitkin Hospital, Ocean Grove Nursing Home, and Francis Asbury Manor. While at Mount Sinai, Rosie met her husband, Kenneth, who was her life partner in many adventures. Kenneth became an Episcopal priest, serving for many years as the Rector of Saint James Episcopal Church in Bradley Beach, making Rosie, as she called herself, the "Rectorine." As she did everywhere, she enriched the parish with her personality, love of people, and devotion to her Lord. Her gracious spirit led her to use her gifts as an avid gardener, reader, cook, and crafter, to enrich the lives of many. Her home, especially at Christmastime, with its collection of Santas, elves, and Nativities, brought wonder and joy to all who saw it.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Frances; and by her sisters, Eleanor and Dorothy. Rosie will live on through those who love her, including her husband of 59 years, Kenneth; children and grandchildren, Katherine and husband Steven Bassett, Joshua, Jessica; Suellen and husband William Woodworth, Katie, Meg; Steven Garcia; Paul and wife Kristi Lynch Gluckow, Zachary, Ben, Matthew, Grace, Thomas; and John and wife Hwa Young Song Gluckow, Oskar; their dear friend, Lucious Zachary; her brother, Joseph Matunis and wife Suzanne; brother-in-law, Seymour Gluckow and wife Harriette; loving nieces and nephews; and caring friends.
A memorial mass and joyous celebration of Rosie's life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14 at Saint James Episcopal Church, 605 4th Ave., Bradley Beach. In addition, those who wish to join in remembering a most remarkable and deeply loved woman may also visit with family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 13 at Saint James. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Bradley Food Pantry, 605 4th Ave., Bradley Beach, NJ. Francioni, Taylor & Lopez Funeral Home, Neptune, is in charge of arrangements.
