Bradley Beach Police show support for Special Olympics New Jersey

Bradley Beach Police show support for  Special Olympics New Jersey

About The Torch Run

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey is a statewide campaign coordinated and managed by all divisions of Law Enforcement officers and officials from throughout the state. Through their efforts, events are conducted year round by the Law Enforcement Community to raise funds for the Special Olympics Movement, serving the athletes of New Jersey. In addition to fundraising, Law Enforcement volunteer at athlete events year round while serving as ambassadors in local communities.

History

In 1982, the late Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Officer Steven Vitale was asked to take photos at a local Special Olympics competition in New Jersey. He was so moved by the determination exhibited by the athletes that he asked other police officers to volunteer at the Summer Games. In 1984, the first New Jersey Torch Run was conceived to raise funds and public awareness for the Special Olympics New Jersey program. The course ran from Liberty State Park in Jersey City to Rutgers Stadium in New Brunswick through eight towns covering 43 miles and raising $7,000. In each succeeding year, the dollar amount became greater and the number of volunteers increased substantially. Today over $2M is raised annually by more than 3,000 officers through local and statewide events including the Law Enforcement Torch Run as part of the annual Summer Games in June.

Guardians Of The Flame

Each year dedicated Law Enforcement officers participate in a journey on foot that brings
the Special Olympics New Jersey "Flame of Hope" torch throughout the state.
Local business supporters, school children, spectators and members of the local community
line the roads to experience the excitement as they cheer on their local Law Enforcement
Officers. The journey ends when the fiery torch ignites the cauldron at the
Opening Ceremonies and officially opens the Summer Games. New Jersey’s annual Torch Run
began in 1983 to raise awareness and funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New Jersey.
"The Torch Run is the culmination of the many hours that members of Law Enforcement
volunteer each year," according to Chief Robert Belfiore, Port Authority of NY/NJ
and Director of the New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run. "It is symbolic of the
commitment and dedication that New Jersey Law Enforcement has for Special Olympics
athletes in this state, and the camaraderie that has developed between Law Enforcement
and Special Olympics athletes." Members of Law Enforcement dedicate this run to the memory
of the 37 Port Authority Police officers who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, many of whom
were long-time supporters of Special Olympics New Jersey.
"The dedication of the Law Enforcement community to Special Olympics New Jersey
is evident all year long, especially on the day of Summer Games Opening Ceremonies,"
according to Marc S. Edenzon, President of Special Olympics New Jersey.
"These committed friends epitomize their loyalty to the thousands of athletes of the
Summer Games by their hands-on involvement and tireless efforts to raise funds and
create awareness of Special Olympics, that success in life can be sparked by
 success on the playing field."
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey has been a major
sponsor of the organization since 1983. Their efforts are the result of a volunteer
committee of more than 30 members who annually coordinate the Torch Run, along
with the other fundraising events on behalf of Special Olympics New Jersey.
Included in this dedicated group are sponsors such as the New Jersey Policemen’s
Benevolent Association, the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police, the New Jersey
Knights of Columbus, the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association,
Macy’s, the ShopRite/Wakefern Corporation and the Italian American Police
Society of New Jersey. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a part of an international
series of torch runs held in every state and in more than 36 countries for Special Olympics.

The Grip of the Rip

Heading to the beach soon? When going in for a swim, be alert to the signs of rip currents. Don't get dragged out to sea! Here's a great VIDEO that puts it all in your visual perspective and gives you a couple easy tips on how to "Break the Grip of the Rip" and escape from a rip current: http://bit.ly/MqUse2

*Your first line of defense is to read the surf forecast BEFORE you head to the beach. NOAA's National Weather Service is your first stop for this critical safety information: http://www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov/forecasts.shtml

*And remember: Your chances of surviving a rip current -- or any other beach-related hazard -- are greatly increased if you're swimming off a beach staffed by lifeguards.

Prepare, plan and stay informed this storm season

Today is June 1st, the official start of Hurricane Season. The NJOEM, the NJ Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness and the NJ Department of Health issued preparedness and safety reminders this week.
http://www.state.nj.us/njoem/media/pdf/pr053012_hurricaneprepare.pdf

Prepare, plan and stay informed
this storm season

Listen to Audio
FREEHOLD, NJ – The start of summer means also means hurricane season is revving up. The Monmouth County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) wants residents to be ready for storms and other emergencies before they hit.
“Last year’s Hurricane Irene drove home the idea of hurricane preparedness,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the county’s Sheriff’s Office and OEM. “Taking the basic steps now means you will be ready for virtually any big weather event or other disaster that may affect Monmouth County.”
“Preparing for the worst makes dealing with it that much easier,” Sheriff Shaun Golden said. “Every resident needs to prepare, plan and stay informed”

Prepare –  Assemble a Kit of Emergency Supplies – Batteries, flashlight, radio, first-aid kit,  medications, food and water to last three or more days, can opener, cooking tools, toiletries.
Plan – Create an Emergency Plan – Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so plan a way to contact one another, such as enlisting the help of a third party in another state as a contact, and review what you will do in different situations.
Stay Informed – Listen to local radio and television for the latest information on storms and other emergencies. Review what warning sirens are used in your community to alert residents of major emergencies.
“The likelihood that you and your family will survive a nor’easter, hurricane or other emergency depends on the preparations that you make now,” Golden said.
Burry also recommends that residents take two additional steps. “To bring your readiness to the next level you should prepare your finances and consider making yourself available to help your neighbors in an emergency,” she said.
Financial Preparedness – Consider your insurance and financial needs in the event of a disaster. Also, take time to prepare a household inventory. If an evacuation is necessary, be sure to have cash or credit cards at your disposal.
Consider joining the Citizen Corps – Join others in you community who are ready to provide critical support to first responders and to fellow residents during emergencies.
Undergoing citizen corps training is a great way to feel empowered in the event of any emergency. The county has two primary programs for you to get involved:
Citizen Emergency Response Team, or CERT, is a program that trains community members to provide volunteer support to local emergency responders during community incidents and disasters. For more information, contact the county OEM  at 732-431-7400 or log onto the county Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com.
Medical Reserve Corps, or MRC, is also a community-based volunteer program that engages medical, public health and other civilian volunteers to strengthen public health and improve emergency preparedness and response. For more information, contact the county Health Department at 732-431-7456 or log onto the county Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com.
Additional information about storm and disaster preparations is available on the county’s Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com.
The county OEM works closely with federal, state and local partners to prepare for virtually all hazards, natural or manmade, that could affect New Jersey’s families, communities and businesses.

House Fire on Parkplace Ave. Today.

The Bradley Beach Fire Department needed help today with a large fire at 118 Parkplace Ave. The fire department has been understaffed for many months now and at today's fire it was very obvious that without the help of surrounding towns the fire would not have been put out. One of our local reporters said the only fire equipment the rolled out of the main street fire house was one engine the other 3 pieces of fire equipment just did not have the manpower to go into service. Question when will the Mayor and council do something? Its time for quick action and a good game plan. Is it time to disband the local fire company and start fresh or enter into an agreement with Avon for full time fire protection. Do we need to lose life before action will be taken?.
Special Thanks to all the fire department and EMS unites the responded or covered the stations of the departments who were put to work in Bradley Beach.

The Goodwill Fire Suppression, Rehab and Rescue Company is being organized and chartered to maintain and support Fire Suppression, Rehab and Rescue and for the general improvement of the fire service of the Borough of Bradley Beach, New Jersey.

The Goodwill Fire Suppression, Rehab and Rescue Company is being organized and chartered to maintain and support Fire Suppression, Rehab and Rescue and for the general improvement of the fire service of the Borough of Bradley Beach, New Jersey.

History The Bradley Beach Fire Department was started by a group of local men in 1893 with the first company called Pioneer, not long after a second company was formed due to fighting in Pioneer this was a company called Independent in the 1920's the south end of Bradley Beach was incorporated into Bradley Beach from Neptune City and the third company Bradley Company started. The was a short lived company on the north end of town but it did not last long due to lack of equipment. From the start of the first company in 1893 till 1989 the average manpower was about 75 to 100 firefighters. In 1989 The Mayor merged the companies together due to many thing which includes indictments handed down for the misappropriation of funds the companies just could not account for money or equipment.  The first of many issues started when Bradley Company did not wish to merge. The three companies were like a family in town with each having it own ways, style and history and fights but now they were all together under one roof. It was not long before fights started over equipment, manpower and jobs at fires. Before the merger One Department Chief ,Each company had A Chief, Captain,Lieutenant, and engineer, after the merger the new company would have One Chief One Asst Chief, One Captain,One Lieutenant and One engineer for 3 engines and one for The Trucks.  This leadership was to much for control at fires under the ICS and fights would start even at fires. After the fights membership dropped, a small amount at first but the fighting would get out of hand sometimes and members would stop coming to meetings and fires.

Today March of 2012 we have only 10 active firefighters, that is a long way from 75 to 100 firefighters only 22 years ago and where the age of the firefighters were 18 to 45 today the age is higher with many be over 40 years old.

We believe that the only way to help is to start new, add fresh blood, new ideas as well wiping the slate clean. The United Engine and Truck company may have been the wrong way to fix a broken system, now looking back bad management of equipment and funds could have been fixed without the merge, maybe the system was not even broken just mismanaged. Can we every get 75 to 100 firefighters again time will tell we have less young people looking to join and less fires due to better fire prevention which makes the job of recruitment harder , but with the right help we can change this and stop the downward spiral.

The issues of no response, low manpower and out of date equipment can only be fixed over time. We believe that a new company will double the manpower in 12 to 18 months by giving firefighters who do not like the old ways a place to come a give back, and a way to give back to Bradley Beach as a firefighter..

Firefighting was never a issue. The three companies as some would say the could fight and yell till the bell rang but life and property always came first.

The following is our purpose, mission statement, goals and statement of Dedication, Pride and Valor.

Our purpose:  Maintain and support Fire Suppression, Rehab and Rescue and for the general improvement of the fire service of the Borough of Bradley Beach, New Jersey.

Mission Statement:The purpose and primary function of The Goodwill Fire Suppression Rehab and Rescue Company Incorporated is.
To educate and provide information to our community on fire prevention, safety and disaster emergencies.
To extend goodwill in our community and promote a spirit of helping others without expecting anything in return.
To promote harmony and goodwill in our own ranks in order for our members to serve their community willingly.
To provide each resident, business and visitor in the Borough of Bradley Beach , New Jersey with the highest level of professional services that we possibly can and provide them to our maximum ability.
To protect the lives and property of our family, friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens, bravely and respectfully.

Goals:
  1. To save lives and property.
  2. To double the firefighting force in 18 months.
  3. To bring equipment up to state and federal standings working with other departments to secure equipment.
  4. Return Dedication to our town by the fire volunteers.
  5. To restore the Pride our four fathers had in our department.
  6. To teach Valor to the next group of young firefighters by mentoring them.

Statement of Dedication, Pride and Valor.
Dedication: Complete and wholehearted fidelity.
Pride: Satisfaction taken in an achievement.
Valor: Courage and boldness, as in battle; bravery.

Dear Governor Christie; Words cannot express enough my family’s deep heart felt thank you to you, my Governor and the N. J State Police. What a first classed honorable professional organization. You have brought closure to my family and I can’t thank you enough.

Dear Governor Christie;
I sent you a message on this “contact the governor” web page; Saturday, March 10th. I asked you to mobilize the State Police Dive Team to recover my cousin’s body from the Raritan River. After I hit the send key, my oldest brother Jim called me. James D. Melville is the Inspector for European Affairs at our U.S. State Department. Big brother Jim said, yeah right John; you contacted the Governor’s Office, okay I’ll hold my breath.
Governor, you stepped right up to the plate and did the most honorable move you could choose. When a Major from the NJ State Police called me this afternoon and told me that their dive team was mobilized today, because of my message to your office and that they had in fact recovered my Cousin Joseph Farrell’s body, I was overcome with emotion.
Words cannot express enough my family’s deep heart felt thank you to you, my Governor and the N. J State Police. What a first classed honorable professional organization. You have brought closure to my family and I can’t thank you enough.
I’m ready to start a new organization: Democrats for Christie!
God bless you, and thank you.
Sincerely,

John Henry Melville

Our Very Own Dangerously Enchanting Garden State God-It Nikole Marie will be performing LIVE with the ever fabulous Rocking Blues God...drum roll please....CHUCK LAMBERT!

http://www.chucklambert.com/

Performing with a full band or orchestra has always been Nikole Marie's passion. She started headlining out in bars and clubs when she was only 15, wowing audiences with her spectacular renditions of blues, rock, pop, jazz and country. Nikole Marie won the New York International Music Festival for best Pop/R&B vocalist. She believes that music is 20% in your head and 80% from the heart.

Blessed with curious eyes, exotic features, a fashion sense of cultural prominence, bubbly personality, over 45.5 Million online views, it's her vocal ability that caught much of the industry's eye and landed her a sponsored tour with Cooper Tires/Rix Magazine. If you've been to a Nikole Marie performance, dropped in on her Myspace profile, or been in the studio with her you will be astounded by her vocal ability. Nikole Marie's lyrics embody the divine sparks of life and absorb the experiences of others.

Nikole Marie is in school studying the field of esthetics which is another way for her to use her creativity to give back to her community.
